3D Maps with Leaflet and eegeo.js

General, Leaflet, Programming, Slider, Tutorials, Web-GIS
We like maps and will continue like them more. Every day, there are changes in the libraries used for mapping. With most maps being 2D, exploring 3D maps is so much fun and better.\ In this post, I describe a procedure to display 3D maps for your web mapping project. First, we will have a HTML file that will handle our map page. Steps: Write a basic HTML file with a title of your wish. <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <title>3D Map</title> </head> <body> </body> </html> Add the Leaflet CSS inside the <head></head> section <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="https://unpkg.com/leaflet@1.0.3/dist/leaflet.css"> You can also load this from your local computer Add the eegeo JS library inside the <head></head> section <script type="text/javascript" src="https://cdn-webgl.eegeo.com/eegeojs/api/v0.1.780/eegeo.js"></script> Add the section in which the map will be displayed <div id="map"…

Hello guys, some time ago I did a sample application on GeoExt, ExtJS, OpenLayers and GeoJSON to manage data from a number of weather stations in the country. This is a front-end application with data being in GeoJSON format. A video about the application uploaded on YouTube : The application can be accessed at Weather Station Portal For more GIS tutorial videos, Subscribe to my channel on YouTube

A Web-GIS – A System for Agriculture

A Web-GIS – A System for Agriculture

GIS, Slider, Web-GIS
Its quite some time since I talked about web GIS development on this blog.In the last one year,I have had a great time exploring different mapping platforms and testing any platform that I came across.Web GIS is a field in which over the last few years, has really seen the light of the day as every organization struggles to migrate to the cloud. Cloud computing platforms have facilitated this move by minimizing on development time required to setup a full GIS stack on the cloud.Having both commercial and open platforms, web GIS has interested many  in different fields and tests have been conducted to prove its importance to a company's area of jurisdiction. As I have been interacting with the industry and organizations in different areas, web GIS is an…

A pilot Land Administration Domain Model(LADM) for Kenya

A pilot Land Administration Domain Model(LADM) for Kenya

General, GIS, Programming, Web-GIS
Kenya has amassed a huge collection of records since 1902 when the colonial government put in place the Crown Land Ordinance of 1902. This law allowed alienation of native lands for the colonial masters and the alienation process involved formal registration of ownership rights. Over the years, a number of laws touching on land were passed and operationalized, with the effect of having land administration and registration being exercised under different legislative regimes. All the documentation produced from land transactions over these years have continued to be kept in paper form. This has seen a big number of these documents get destroyed by normal aging processes, lost through untracked paper trails and from corruption driven motives.  The Institute of Geomatics, GIS and Remote Sensing (IGGReS) of Dedan Kimathi University of…

Adding layers from GeoServer in QGIS

Adding layers from GeoServer in QGIS

GeoServer, GIS, QGIS, Software, Web-GIS
In a GIS, the ability to handle more data formats is of key priority while developing the system. This gives the GIS users a wider variety of formats to choose from during their analysis. QGIS has implemented this by allowing users to add data from many sources and in many formats. Loading a WMS, WFS or a WCS is one of the vital abilities for users carrying out web mapping operations with their data. The three formats of data can be loaded easily directly from GeoServer into QGIS. First we need to establish a secure connection between QGIS and GeoServer. Load the WMS/WMTS dialog window at Layers >> Add WMS/WMTS Layer on the Menu (QGIS) or by selecting the Add WMS/WMTS layer from the Manage layers toolbar. Select “New” to…

Publishing maps using QGIS Cloud

GIS, QGIS, QGIS Cloud, Software, Tutorials, Web-GIS
Sharing the outputs of your GIS work with other people on the globe has become a common practice nowadays. The methods used in sharing this information matters and depends on a number of things;the availability of storage space to store your datasets, the cost of operating a web map, user interactivity of your web maps, the kind of technology the web map uses and many more. QGIS have the QGISCloud that is can be used to publish maps online within FIVE minutes.Another advantage is that QGIS is Open Source thus no worry of startup costs. This tutorial will demostrate how to publish a map using QGISCloud. Steps To publish a map using QGISCloud, you need to first install the QGISCloud Plugin. This can be done at “Manage and Install plugins” under the Plugins Menu…

Open Source Web Mapping

Open Source Web Mapping

GIS, Web-GIS
During my second year of college, I came across this technology where maps could be rendered online (web mapping) and users could interact with the maps for visualization and analysis. I found this technology interesting and decided to give it a shot. I encountered the “usual” barriers experienced by any beginner in coding. Then, I came across these interesting and well explained platforms for web mapping (Open Source platforms). After a couple months of research, I settled for ExtJS, OpenLayers, GeoExt, GeoServer, PHP, QGIS, PostgreSQL /PostGIS and HTML/CSS as my development platforms for my web maps. I knew this was a huge project for me to undertake but always motivated by the capabilities the platforms offered me. Spending days and nights on-line trying to come up with something meaningful was…
